The Novel

A novel written as a doctoral dissertation — a long story about home, told from the far side of leaving it.

The novel was written as a doctoral dissertation at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville — a book-length answer to the question the shorter work keeps asking: whether you can ever really narrate the place you're from, or only the person it made.

Where it stands

The dissertation draft is done; the revision — the part where a defensible manuscript becomes a readable book — is ongoing, in the gaps between teaching and coaching other people's manuscripts at Bloomsday Literary. It is patient work, and the book is patient with her.
